Chas Chandler: The Man Who Discovered Jimi Hendrix

When you think of Chas Chandler, your first thought might be his time as the bassist for The Animals, the British rock band famous for House of the Rising Sun. But his greatest contribution to music history wasn’t his own playing—it was his discovery and management of Jimi Hendrix.
From Newcastle to Global Stardom
Born in 1938 in Newcastle, England, Chandler grew up surrounded by music. He picked up the bass and became a member of The Animals, led by Eric Burdon. Their deep bluesy sound, fueled by Chandler’s bass lines, helped define the British Invasion era.
But by 1966, Chandler was growing tired of life in a band. He wanted to move into artist management, and fate would soon introduce him to his greatest discovery.
Finding Hendrix
While in New York, Chandler saw Jimi Hendrix performing at Café Wha?. He was mesmerized by Hendrix’s playing—especially his rendition of Hey Joe. At that moment, Chandler knew Hendrix had something special. He convinced Jimi to come to London, promising him a record deal and putting together The Jimi Hendrix Experience.
A Key Figure in Rock History
Under Chandler’s management, Hendrix skyrocketed to fame. He helped shape his image, guided the band’s production, and ensured that their first album, Are You Experienced, was a masterpiece. However, by 1968, tensions grew between Chandler and Hendrix, leading to his departure from management.
After leaving the music business, Chandler returned to Newcastle, producing and managing bands like Slade. He lived a quieter life until his passing in 1996, but his impact on rock history remains undeniable. Without Chas Chandler, the world might never have known Jimi Hendrix.
