Sathya Sai Baba was one of the most widely known spiritual teachers of modern India. Revered by millions around the world, he taught a message centred on love, service to others, and the unity of all religions.
Early Life
Sathya Sai Baba was born Satyanarayana Raju in 1926 in the village of Puttaparthi. As a young teenager he declared himself to be the reincarnation of the earlier saint Shirdi Sai Baba, and soon began attracting followers.
His hometown later became a major pilgrimage centre, with his ashram Prasanthi Nilayam drawing visitors from across the globe.
Core Teachings
Sai Baba’s message was simple and universal. He taught that the essence of all religions is the same and that spiritual life should be based on five core human values:
-
Truth, Right Conduct, Peace, Love, Non-violence
One of his best-known sayings summarised this philosophy:
“Love All, Serve All. Help Ever, Hurt Never.”
He encouraged followers to deepen their own religious faith while practicing compassion and selfless service.
Spiritual Practices
Devotees were encouraged to cultivate spiritual discipline through:
-
Prayer and meditation, Devotional singing (bhajans), Moral living, Selfless service to others
Many followers travelled to receive darshan, the blessing of seeing or being in the presence of a spiritual teacher.
Humanitarian Work
A significant part of Sai Baba’s legacy lies in the charitable institutions he founded. These include hospitals, schools and major drinking water projects that serve millions of people.
The Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences provides advanced medical care completely free of charge, while the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning offers university education without tuition fees.
Legacy
After his death in 2011, Sai Baba’s global following and charitable organisations have continued their work. To his devotees he remains a divine teacher who demonstrated the power of love and service.
At the heart of his message was a simple idea: spirituality should be lived through compassion, integrity, and helping others.
