Early Life and Education
Suzanna Leigh, born Sandra Eileen Anne Smith on July 26, 1945, in Berkshire, England, was a British actress known for her captivating roles in the 1960s and 1970s. She attended convent schools outside London and began her film career as a child extra in various British productions. Under the mentorship of her godmother, Vivien Leigh, she adopted the stage name Suzanna Leigh.
Career
Leigh’s career blossomed with memorable roles in both film and television. She played Elvis Presley’s love interest in Paradise, Hawaiian Style (1966) and a stewardess in the comedy Boeing Boeing (1965). She also starred in several Hammer films, including The Lost Continent (1968) and Lust for a Vampire (1971).
Leigh gained recognition in the horror genre with roles in cult classics like The Deadly Bees (1966) and The Fiend (1972). She portrayed Amber in Son of Dracula (1974) and later appeared in the 2015 film Grace of the Father. In 2000, Leigh penned her autobiography, Paradise, Suzanna Style, offering fans a glimpse into her intriguing life and career.
Suzanna was the best friend of her fellow actress Imogen Hassall and it was Suzanna who found Imogen’s body in her Wimbledon home, having overdosed on Tuinal tablets. Her death came on the day they were supposed to leave together for a holiday in Mombasa.
For a short period Suzanna had earlier also dated Imogen’s boyfriend drummer Alan Whitehead of the chart topping band Marmalade.
Death
In September 2016, Suzanna Leigh was diagnosed with stage-four liver cancer. She passed away in Winter Garden, Florida, on December 11, 2017. Her legacy endures through her contributions to film and television, and she is remembered fondly by fans and colleagues alike.
